About this app

Historically East London has been a hotbed of activism, and women have been at the centre of social change for centuries.

From the East London Federation of Suffragettes to Women Unite Against Racism, the streets of Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Waltham Forest are packed with untold stories. The women who walked these roads before us did so with courage and determination.

Come on a journey through time as we honour their commitment to this diverse and culturally rich part of London.

The app features three tours with maps and photos as you explore. Look out too for the audio clips from women who were there, who'll bring the history to life for you.

Take your time as you explore. Sometimes you'll go along busy roads, so be careful and always use pedestrian crossings when you can. You may wish to walk with a friend, so one can be the eyes and the other the ears as you move around. A pair of headphones might be useful too as some of the areas can be noisy.

In Her Footsteps has been supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
