About this app

Graticule allows you to share your precise (GPS) or approximate (network) location with anyone you choose.

It can even piggyback on existing apps that are active (like running or cycling apps) to help preserve battery life.

Location sharing in 60 seconds
☆ install Graticule
☆ configure the beacon source and interval
☆ share your private web tracking link
☆ enjoy!

What beacon source should I use?
☆ GPS: best accuracy, bad battery life -- best used outside cities
☆ Network: decent accuracy, decent battery life -- best used inside cities
☆ Passive: variable accuracy, best battery life -- best used when you have another location app already running (like Strava, Runtastic, Waze, Google Maps, etc)

What beacon interval should I use?
As big (less often) as you can.

Even choosing every 5s instead of 1s, when using GPS, makes a tremendous difference in battery life.

Shared your private tracking link with the wrong person?
No problem!
You can switch to a new one in a matter of seconds.

Features
☆ no registration required
☆ you get a private web tracking link that you can share with anyone (they don't have to have an app installed to view)
☆ the tracking code is disposable, change it any time you want
☆ as easy as possible on battery/data usage
☆ no identifiable information sent from your device
☆ fully secure and encrypted communication
☆ passive mode (piggybacks on other active apps, like running/cycling ones)

What can I do with it?
☆ give peace of mind to your family or loved ones when travelling
☆ showing off while paragliding/flying/skydiving (assuming you still have enough signal for a data connection)
☆ putting a cheap android phone in your car, on your pet, or anywhere else and track it
☆ guide someone remotely to a location
☆ no longer have to answer "Where are you?" or "How far away are you?"

What do I need?
☆ an android device :-)
☆ data connection
☆ GPS or Wi-Fi turned on (depending on what kind of accuracy you need -- precise or approximate)

Mobile data usage?
Mobile data use for a GPS beacon source with a 1 interval update is about 2.70 MB per hour.

Increasing the interval to 2 seconds will halve it, so 1.35 MB per hour.

And so on...

NOTE: You need a data connection (enough cell tower signal) for this to work, it's not a substitute for a PLB/EPIRB radio beacon

The tracklog is NOT saved, just the last beacon!

I'm blown away by the simplicity and practicality of this app. No need for extra bells and whistles; it does what it does, and does it well. The adjustable time between "pings" is incredibly useful; even some of the cheapest mobile data plans can be used with it to turn an old smartphone into a tracker. It's become one of my favorite apps, from the first day.

Great app, Emil. However... it is not persistent after restarting phone. Is this something to do with turning off notification? (long press, don't show notifications, etc). I don't want to see a persistent icon but also want to set and forget and not worry about it when I turn phone back on. Also... maybe very difficult, but will location using wifi be something you consider in future? (a la, the way Google uses a combination of network+wifi network locations with or without GPS to get a fairly accurate location - just using mobile network is quite random. I would prefer not to use GPS all the time.) Reply to dev: Thank you very much for the reply. An option to start on boot would be very nice. Also, I only see Beacon source as 'GPS', 'Network' and 'Passive' - does 'Network' also include Wifi? (assuming wifi is on on the phone) #2 reply: Thank you! A survive after boot option would be awesome!

Hey Andrew, there's no option currently to automatically start at boot. Location using wifi is already added, but you have to manually select it in Settings -> Beacon Source and have wifi enabled. Hope that helps! EDIT: Yes, 'network' uses the most accurate one of the WiFi/GSM networks. I'll add the boot option when I have some free time!
