About this app

A software variometer. This application uses Kalman filter to estimate climb/descent rate from barometric sensor and accelerometer data. The estimation is displayed on a dial indicator, with optional sound indication. Does not need weather information to work.

The last update causes the app to hang after a half hour to an hour or so. This is on two different devices with two different versions of Android. I wish I had backed up the APK before updating! Now I can't go back. After hanging, we have to close and restart the app. My other criticism is lack of documentation. It is great to be able to adjust the parameters, but they are not intuitively obvious, and I am an engineer!

Thank you for reporting the problem! The only change in latest update was a bug fix in the smoother, which can be turned off by setting "Smoother lag" to 0. The free book by Roger R. Labbe may help to understand the Kalman filter parameters: https://github.com/rlabbe/Kalman-and-Bayesian-Filters-in-Python. Source code of this app is also on GitHub.

Excellent. In IVSI mode it responds instantly. Have not tried it in flight yet. The "samples" setting is supposed to allow you to trade off response time (lag) vs smoothness, but doesn't seem to do anything at all (at least in IVSI mode). Even so, 5 stars.

This app requires 3 position calibration of accelerometers. Probably good for most users. I was trying to find something indicating small changes in air pressure. My phone does have a barometer sensor, but I've no idea yet how sensitive it is.
