About this app

The Statesman is one of India's oldest English newspapers. It was founded in Kolkata in 1875 and is directly descended from The Friend of India (founded 1818). The Englishman (founded 1821) was merged with The Statesman in 1934. The Delhi edition of The Statesman began publication in 1931. The Statesman Weekly is a compendium of news and views from the Kolkata and Delhi editions. Printed on airmail paper, it is popular with readers outside India. The Statesman (average weekday circulation approximately 180,000) is a leading English newspaper in West Bengal. The Sunday Statesman has a circulation of 230,000.
The Statesman has distinguished itself through objective coverage of events, its value as an honest purveyor of news emphasised at times of crisis such as the Bengal Famine of 1943 and the infamous internal Emergency of the mid-1970s. It is forthright in the expression of its views. Its pursuit of the truth has been relentless and often at considerable cost to itself, as when the government of Indira Gandhi, in gross abuse of power, attempted to suppress its voice and when the government of Rajiv Gandhi interfered with the grant of statutory clearances to its modernization plans unless the paper changed its editorial stance.

The Statesman prevailed, as the truth must prevail, and remains a favourite of readers in Kolkata and other parts of India.

The Statesman is now available on your android phones & tablets.

Disappointed. It seems like the app has frozen in time. News articles have not been updated since past many days. Perhaps the people's parliament has taken an adjournment.

The Statesman has had a record of unbiased reporting of news around India and the world. The app does not do justice to the house. There are areas where a lot of development could be made, which would go a long way to ease the efforts of a reader. A few of those developments which could come to my mind are reproduced here: 1. On the home pages of the categories, i.e., "Home", "India", "Cities", etc., the full headlines of the articles are not displayed. 2. There is no option to bookmark an article from the page overview itself. One has to click on the article; and after the article opens, does one have the option to bookmark the article. Well, if I have to go into the article to bookmark it, then there appears to be a redundancy of the need to bookmark it altogether. One added advantage of bookmarking is also the fact that one can go through the article at a later time even if the internet connection decides to play truant. I think, it would be good to have the bookmark and share option on the overview page itself. These two suggestions immediately come to mind. Further suggestions, if any, will be posted.

The app does not reflect the all the articles of the newspaper (including enewspaper). One has to open newspaper mode of the app to get to all the news. Moreover the enewspaper is not user friendly at all. It looks more like scanned copy of the physical paper. It would be great if all the articles are included in the main app itself.
