liturgical calendar

The companion through day and year

The Liturgical Calendar has been published by B. Kühlen Verlag for the German-speaking area since 1903.

The liturgical calendar is based on the general Roman calendar and the regional calendar for the German-speaking area; according to this, the information on the front of the calendar is designed with additional references to readings and gospels, psalms, the Liturgy of the Hours, name days and memorial days. The gospel is offered on the back on Sundays and public holidays. The Pope's prayer requests, thoughts, aphorisms of great thinkers, theologians and saints from the past and present accompany the reader throughout the day and year.

The liturgical calendar contains:

- the ecclesiastical festivals (solemnities, festivals, required and non-required commemorations, church and diocesan festivals and name days) are highlighted according to their font size. For Sundays and holy days of obligation, the date and name appear in red. Other ecclesiastical solemnities that are not holy days of obligation are indicated by their names being red, higher holidays in bold and larger font size,
- the calendar with liturgical indications for the celebration of Holy Mass for every day of the year (priority of day or feast, church colour, readings, Gospels, Psalms, Liturgy of the Hours).
- Beginning and end of the festival circles and times in normal type and the name days (if they are not already mentioned as a day festival) in italics,
the daily slogans taken from the liturgy of the festival or day in question or relating to special times or votive masses,
- Astronomical (not astrological) notes: The calendar contains the rising and setting times of the sun and moon, the phases of the moon and the daily position of the moon in the sign of the zodiac (explanation of these signs in the calendar appendix).

Notes on the content of the liturgical calendar:

- Rules for the votive masses (day of prayer for spiritual vocations, Sacred Heart Friday, Sacred Heart Saturday and Marian Saturday) can be found in the appendix before the source reference,
- Days of prayer and Quatember weeks, during which the Church prays for “human concerns, especially for the fruits of the earth and for human creativity”,
- Commemoration of the ordination, election and inauguration of the Pope,
- World Peace Day, World Missionary Day for Children, Epiphany, Africa Day, World Week of Prayer, World Women's Day of Prayer, World Day of Prayer for Vocations, World Children's Day,
- Adveniat offerings, collections for the Holy Land, Misereor collections, Renovabis collections, Swiss Lenten offerings,
- International Day of Disabled People, International Day of Volunteers, Day of Human Rights,
- Day of German Unity, national holiday in Austria, federal holiday in Switzerland

Technical Notes in the Liturgical Calendar:

- Explanations of the abbreviations (Old and New Testament, list of archbishoprics and dioceses) can be found at the end of the calendar,
- also a compilation of the postponed saints' festivals and the dates of the movable festivals in the current and following year.

Pope's request:

- The general concerns and mission concerns of the Pope, which he entrusts to the apostolate of prayer for each year, can be found at the turn of the month.
